School Safety is a very important element at Weldon Middle School. As a School Resource Officer (SRO) and a sworn law enforcement officer with Weldon Police Department, I am responsible for providing security and crime prevention services in the Weldon Middle School environment.
I, Sgt. Raymond Vaughan, Jr. work closely with administrators in an effort to create a safer environment for both students and staff. My responsibilities as an SRO are similar to regular police officers in that I have the ability to make arrests, respond to calls for service, and document incidents that occur within my jurisdiction.
As a school resource officer, I typically have additional duties to include mentoring and conducting presentations on youth-related issues. While performing my duties to advocate safe schools practices, it promotes the protection of students from violence, exposure to weapons and threats, theft, bullying, and the sale or use of illegal substances on school grounds.
School safety is linked to improved student and school outcomes. In particular, emotional and physical safety in school are related to academic performance. At the same time, students who are victims of physical or emotional harassment or who are involved in the sale or use of illegal substances on school grounds are at risk for poor attendance, course failure and dropout. It is my duty as the school resource officer to ensure the safety and provide law enforcement education to promote good decision making and be a role model and counselor for the youth here at Weldon Middle School.
